Abstract: Distribution cables play a vital role in electrical power systems by delivering electricity safely and efficiently to consumers. However, faults such as open-circuit and short-circuit conditions can significantly affect system performance and reliability. An open-circuit fault occurs when a conductor is broken or disconnected, resulting in interruption of current flow and power supply failure. In contrast, a short-circuit fault arises due to insulation failure or accidental contact between conductors, causing excessive current flow, overheating, and potential damage to equipment. Early detection and proper protection mechanisms are essential to minimize risks, prevent fire hazards, and ensure uninterrupted power distribution. This study highlights the causes, effects, and importance of identifying open and short circuit faults in distribution cables for safe and efficient power system operation.
