Concept of zero turn drive (Tata pixel)
Abstract: This project presents a prototype model of a “Zero-Turn Drive” system. The model demonstrates a mechanism that enables a vehicle to achieve zero turning radius, allowing it to take a U-turn about the midpoint of the rear axle. This innovative concept enables extremely quick turning by permitting the vehicle to rotate almost in place, without requiring the large turning space needed in conventional steering systems. A similar concept has been implemented in the Tata Pixel car.
In a normal steering mechanism, a vehicle follows a circular path while turning. However, in a zero-turn radius mechanism, the vehicle rotates around an axis passing through its own center of gravity. As a result, the vehicle can turn within the space equal to its own length, without any additional clearance. This makes parking, maneuvering in tight spaces, and performing sharp U-turns significantly easier.
The prototype model shows how a specially designed sliding gear train combined with an advanced steering mechanism can enable this unique movement, making it a promising concept for future automobile technology.
